Student Firefighter/EMT
Student firefighters are assigned to one of two shifts. Shifts work on a one-on; one-off type schedule. All student firefighters are assigned a room within the station, and reside within the station. Student firefighters work year round, including the summer and holidays. Shifts during the week generally begin at 5 p.m. and ends the following morning at 8 a.m. Weekend shifts are generally a full 24 hours from 10 am to 10 am the following day. Students are off-duty, but subject to call, Monday through Friday between 8-5.
When student firefighter positions are open the job is posted through the Student Employment website. Applicants must meet all the requirements for student employment. The hiring process consists of a written test, a physical agility, and an interview.
Student firefighters are initially trained to the NM Firefighter Taskbook, which is the minimum qualification to be a firefighter in the state. This must be completed within 30 days of hire, and is provided in-house. Once the taskbook is completed, DFES pays to attend the next available EMT-Basic class through DACC. DFES also provides in-house training programs for Hazardous Materials Technician and Confined Space Rescue Technician. DFES will also pay for members to attend the EMT-Intermediate course through DACC. Various other training and certifications are offered as they are needed such as Wild land Firefighting, Vehicle Extrication, ATV Driver Qualification, etc.
Occasional EMT
DFES maintains a group of EMS providers who typically work in support of special events such as concerts and athletic events. We average about 130-160 of such events each year. Applicants must be a licensed EMS provider in New Mexico, and must also pass a written and practical evaluation for their level of licensure.
